Know Your Turning Tools

On Saturday May 13th Norm Peltz is doing an amazing class on carving tools here at Oaktree. The class will be from 9:00AM to noon. This is an excellent way to get started in wood carving basics. Norm is a professional level carver, well known in the wood carving circles and will be displaying some exceptional pieces he has created.

Introduction to Bowl Turning

Fred Inman will be teaching the basics of bowl turning plus tool selection and sharpening.

Pen Turning from Start to Finish

Shelly Bice will be teaching all of the steps needed to turn an ink pen from start to finish.

French Polishing

Ken Ellis will be teaching the basics of french polishing. A French polish finish is outstanding for showing off the beauty of any wood surface. It also dries quickly, so you don't have to worry about dust settling on it, and does not require sanding between coats or an expensive ventilation system. However, many consider it too tricky, time consuming, or requiring too much skill to consider using. While French polishing does require some technique, you can get a satisfactory finish with just a little bit of practice. This workshop will give you the experience, know-how, and confidence to apply a beautiful French polish finish to your projects.

Working with Argentium Sterling Silver

Heidi Mandich from Indianapolis will be joining us for a 4 hour beginning silversmithing class. In this class you will learn the techniques for working with silver, accented with copper and brass, to producing a silver spinner ring for you to enjoy.

Intarsia on the Scroll Saw: Part 2

Rhonda Inman will be finishing the intarsia piece started in Part 1. This class will cover cutting, sanding and assembling the final project.

Wayne Mcann will be demonstrating the process of duplicating existing spindles on the lathe using basic tools like a caliper and ruler.

Scroll Saw Tricks and Techniques

This class will include project options, wood and blade selection, use, set up and much more. Several functions of saw usage and safety will be demonstrated, while also showing you how to make a compound Christmas ornament and matching keepsake box in the process. This class is designed to provide those with existing, limited skills or the beginner, all the information they need to start tackling a wide range of projects with a solid foundation in the saw’s use and capabilities

How to Build Segmented Wood Turnings

Oaktree’s latest turning class provides all the steps to set up a segmented turning project including wood selection, cutting and assembly, turning and finishing. This is an excellent class to understand what is needed and how to rapidly produce beautiful and unique turned projects. This presentation is designed for those with some basic turning exposure who want to expand their expertise in this new area. Beginners Wood Turning

Expanding on the theory discussed in our Wood Turning Basics (suggested prerequisite), this class begins to show how a simple, rough piece of wood is transformed into a beautiful piece of art. In the class, students will be able get hands-on experience in each step of basic turning process from start to finish. At completion, the students should have a good understanding of mounting your turning, basic tool selection and usage, turning speeds and feed, tool position, basic sharpening requirements and final finishing basics.

Fine Metalworking

Learn the fine art of metal working — how to use the essential hand tools of a metal-smith creating simple to stunning ideas in non-ferrous metals, such as copper and brass. In this introductory, demonstration style, class the instructor will demonstrate specialized techniques such as using a jeweler's saw to cut and pierce, hammers and stamps to create textures and simple forging, cold connection of elements, heating and cleaning of metal, and final surface finishing methods. With these basic techniques you can enhance your current projects with new materials, use these methods in jewelry making or create unique standalone pieces.
